Take Off the Invisibility Cloak

How to be seen by leadership

Ever wonder why you’re not getting the same opportunities as other people? Some people have all the luck, right? Wrong. The people with the opportunities make it happen for themselves.

No one can read your mind. If you want to be a part of something or create something new, you have to let people know you’re interested. Once your manager knows you are trying to achieve something, they’ll be able to think of you when new opportunities present themselves.

How do you know it’s the right opportunity? You should only take on activities that will help you achieve your goals. If you want to be seen, do something that is literally seen by others.

Brie worked with me and was well-renowned at what she does, but she could not get to the next level. She did presentations for the team, but at her Senior Manager level, she needed to be doing presentations for Directors, VPs, etc. in order to get seen.

Ways to make yourself visible:

  1. Be good at your job. This must happen before any of the other bullets matter.

  2. Be helpful to other members of the team

  3. Provide solutions any time you voice a problem

  4. Create a useful tool for your coworkers

  5. Presentations - First present for your peers and manager, then strive to present two levels above yours

*Tip: Leadership loves numbers and charts

  6. Lead a group towards a common goal

  7. Share ideas to better the organization

Keep in mind who you want to be seen by. Then, it’s imperative when you do get your opportunity, you shine like the rockstar you are. Remember, you can do this! If you need help preparing book a meeting with a mentor and let’s talk about it.
